![]() A figurative piece was desired by the new tenants of this building designed by Naish Waddington for JCN Investments and two casts of ‘2.5 million light years’, were purhased form the artist Mariel Neudecker. Specifically commisioned to accompany them, a third figure 'Döppelganger', is a life-size figure of a man which stands at the looking out into the distant landscape. Turned away from the viewer, he appears to be absorbed in his surroundings as if prepared for a journey. Neudecker’s art often draws on historical representations of the sublime landscape, and this new sculpture relates to the ‘turned’ figures - Rückenfigur (literally ‘back figure’) – found in 19th century romantic painting, including works by Caspar David Friedrich. Cast in aluminium with a matt silver surface, this new figure becomes almost invisible in certain light conditions, conveying a ghostly quality. The title of the work plays on ideas of time and space - making reference to the furthest point in space that the human eye can see, the Andromeda Galaxy – and this strange and remarkable figure may be interpreted as a time-traveller. This figure and one of the standing figures will be grouped outside the entrance to the building and the third, standing, figure will be visible looking out from the top floor balcony. |
