The Carlton

This new development of appartments by Antler Homes, on the site of the former Carlton Hotel, has a u-shaped courtyard facing the ocean for which local artist Nicholas Romeril has been commissioned to produce a sculpture. ‘Baitball’ is Romeril’s first large scale sculpture. The inspiration for this piece derives from his love of the sea. He is constantly thinking about it and how it affects our small island.

“I have done a bit of diving and the most memorable experience was swimming through a shoal of fish in South East Asia. I really wanted to capture the movement and illusion of a shoal spinning uniformly”. The sculpture is created using the highest-grade mirror polished stainless steel sheets. The effect is that each shape reflects each other and so it is difficult the identify individuals. “I have also been keen to only use local artisans to make the sculpture. Apart from buying the steel it has been entirely made on Island”.

The concrete base into which they are to be set will be sculpted by Nicholas to represent the sandy bottom of the sea.
